 - In a heartwarming display of community spirit, Helping Hand and the Sibongile Manungo Foundation brought festive cheer to Ngomahuru Hospital patients in Masvingo District this week. However, the visit also shed light on the hospital's critical challenges, including drug abuse prevalence and resource shortages.

The organizations hosted a heartfelt Christmas party, providing food and entertainment to patients and staff. The event offered a much-needed respite, but it couldn't mask the underlying issues plaguing the facility.

A staggering 80% of Ngomahuru's 121 patients are reportedly struggling with drug addiction, with men forming the majority. The hospital faces critical shortages of medication and qualified healthcare workers, further compounding the challenges.

Limited accommodation forces the hospital to discharge patients prematurely, jeopardizing their recovery. Despite accepting all ages free of charge, Ngomahuru relies solely on referrals from general hospitals, highlighting the strain on Zimbabwe's healthcare system.

Despite the bleak situation, the Christmas party offered a glimmer of hope. Patients expressed gratitude for the organizations' efforts, particularly praising the "mouthwatering" food prepared by head chef Divah. Music and interaction further uplifted spirits, creating a sense of community and shared joy.

In a moving speech, Helping Hand coordinator Mr Gerald Maguta emphasized the importance of love in healing, stating, "Since the patients come from our communities, we have to show them love." Sibongile Foundation member Zivai Emmanuel Karenga echoed this sentiment, saying, "We are to give not because we have excess, but as an act of sacrifice!"

The event also saw pledges of support from CBM and Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe, who witnessed the hospital's struggles firsthand. The directors promised to address some of the critical issues, offering a ray of hope for the future of Ngomahuru and its patients.

While the Christmas cheer brought temporary relief, Ngomahuru Hospital's plight serves as a stark reminder of the immense challenges facing Zimbabwe's healthcare system. The hospital's urgent need for resources and support is a call to action for both the community and the authorities.
