Access to Land and Property rights Empowerment Luncheon on cards

 By Angeline Zimbwani Mikiri

Even though women are the primary users of agricultural land in most African communities, the system of patriarchy which dominates social organization has tended to discriminate again inst women when it comes to ownership and control of land resources. Although most legal frameworks (including the constitutions are progressive towards gender equality, challenges remain, ineffective implementation and enforcement of the laws and policies by the agencies provided with such responsibility. Property rights are still an issue of concern. A great need to secure property rights for women is an important development. Most women frequently do not enjoy their rights to access and control productive resources.  The issue of securing loans from financial institutions is hindered because most women lack property rights. Usually the implementation is hindered by sociocultural norms and attitudes. as such, women’s land rights are not well promoted and protected because attitudes towards women’s land rights at family, community level, and institutional levels have not shifted in a manner that enables the translation of policies into practice

It is against this background that the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day organization is organizing an empowerment luncheon on property rights to concertize women to know what the law says about women’s access to land and property rights. The luncheon will highlight key issues affecting growth of women in business. These issues consist of lack of capital to start or grow business, lack of collateral to secure a loan from financial institutions. The event will be held at Chevron Hotel in Masvingo on the 10th of December 2022. It will start in the afternoon, from 1400-1830hrs. Registration fee is $20 which includes lunch and refreshments

Another critical issue is the issue of property rights. Most women are crying foul when it comes to the issue of properties. I have realized that a lot of women are ignorant while others take the issue of property rights for granted. This result in properties being sold without the knowledge of the other partner. The luncheon will highlight how women can safeguard their properties through the issue of registering a deed of trust. It is also going to be a platform to unpack the marriage bill which is now a law. The platform will also highlight how women can access land for agricultural purposes as well as for the construction of residential and commercial buildings.

The whole idea is trying to come up with a bankable and empowered woman who is able to navigate the terrain of challenges and come out a victor not a victim. How women they can venture into large projects like property development large scale farming and infrastructural development.

We have invited experts in land development, legal practitioners, Local authorities, Ministry of Lands Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, bankers, Real Estate agents, Ministry of Women Affairs Community, Small and medium Enterprises Development, business development experts and organizations such as The Msasa project.

This event is open to women from all sectors, men are invited as well. We urge men to encourage their sisters, mothers, aunts, wives and daughters to attend the luncheon.

It is also a platform to network, have fun, exchange ideas with experts in various sectors of the economy.

We will also have an expert who is going to talk about how to master the art of networking.

Women are encouraged to bring their business cards, their banners, fliers, products and services to showcase at the luncheon.
