Prof Sunungurai Chingarande Mutanga, Appointed the new Vice Chancellor for Women University in Africa Prof Sunungurai Mutanga has been appointed the Vice Chancellor for Women University in Africa. She has taken over from the FoundingV ice Chancellor Prof Hope Cynthia Sadza. Professor Mutanga born in 1975 in Gokwe Zimbabwe. She did her primary education in Gokwe. She later did her secondary school education at Masvingo Day Secondary School before joining Hama High School for her upper secondary school where she studied Shona, Divinity and History. She was admitted to the University of Zimbabwe in 1995 to study towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Sociology in the Department of Sociology. Prof Mutanga graduated with a University Book prize in 1997. She then immediately enrolled for a Master of Science degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology in 1998 at the same time serving as a teaching assistant in the Department of Sociology. She graduated with a Master of Science degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology in 2000. Upon graduation, she appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology where she taught a number of courses including Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Health and Illness, Crime and Deviance, Sociology of Environment, Sociology and Anthropology of Tourism amongst others. She then enrolled for a Doctor of Philosophy in 2003 and graduated in 2009 for a thesis on ‘LIVELIHOODS IN CITIES OF THE SOUTH: CONTEMPORARY URBAN AND PERI-URBAN AGRICULTURE IN HARARE, ZIMBABWE’. She was awarded a grant for thesis writing by the Africa Capacity Building Foundation in collaboration with the Association of African Universities in 2008. Prof Mutanga has served as chairperson of the Department at the University of Zimbabwe and vice chairperson of the Research Board at the same institution. Prof Mutanga is the coordinator and focal person for the Resilient Africa Network, working with over 100 universities in East Africa, West Africa, Horn of Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. She has served on the boards of the following organisations: Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe, Primson Consultancy, Africa Youth Innovation Centre and the Centre for Zimbabwean Studies of the Rhodes University. She is an external examiner for degree programmes in Sociology and Development Studies at Women’s University in Africa, Midlands State University, Africa University, Rhodes University and Fort Hare University. Prof Mutanga has 24 publications to her name, many of them in the area of gender and women empowerment. She has supervised a number of postgraduate theses. She is a content reviewer for a number of international journals including the Eastern Africa Social Science Review, the Journal of Peace and Conflict Studies, Sage Publications and African Identities. She is also the board member of Women Entrepreneurship Day organisation in Zimbabwe, a global movement celebrated in 144 countries. Prof Mutanga has provided consultancy services to United Nations (UN) agencies in Zimbabwe inc7luding UN Women, International Labour Organisation (ILO), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO and other international agencies that include African Capacity Building Foundation, Hivos, World Vision International, CIMMYT, Care International, Trocaire and Plan International, amongst others. In 2014 she joined Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU) in 2014 as Pro-Vice Chancellor and was promoted to be the University’s Vice Chancellor in 2016. -Mutanga has received several awards to her name that includes being a second runner up for the 2016 Megafest Women’s Awards for her contributions in "Zimbabwe’s education sector and Zimbabwe’s Top Female Vice Chancellor of the year 2017. Women University in Africa has an enrolment of 80 percent women and 20 percent women. Women University in Africa is a private Institution which was founded by two visionaries, Prof Hope Cynthia Sadza and Former Minister of Education in Zimbabwe Dr Fay King Chung. WUA aims to address gender disparity and foster and foster equity until there is equity in tertiary accessing ed2ucation and work om knowledge and skills in areas of vital importance for women.
