In pursuit of Greatness (part 1)

Angie Zimbwani  Mikiri

(My birthday Message; Special dedication to orphans and those who feel neglected)

I grew up in Mabvuku Township in Harare. I also spent part of my childhood in Zvimba communal land in the Western part of Zimbabwe. My parents enrolled me at a group 'A' school and all appeared well for me, until tragedy struck.

At the tender age of 15, I lost my both parents in one year.   My father was the first to pass on and a few months later, my mother followed him. I remember one day sitting on my father’s grave at our rural home crying just after l had learnt of my mother’s death. I was more than heartbroken. It was a very tough situation and I cried uncontrollably. I later realised no matter the situation, life had to go on. I put myself together and began to think of what was to come after the loss of my loving parents.

The death of my parents was a big blow to me I had to adjust so as to fit my new life as an orphan. Life was tough but it had to go on anyway.

I had to bid farewell to life at an elite school and transfer to Mabvuku High School. It is under situations like these that l learnt to live a life of greatness. I understood greatness from a different perspective. Being an orphan taught me to fight for my space. The way my young life unfolded without the two  pillars of support- mother and father- taught me that one’s background has nothing to do with where they are destined to be in life.

It is in times like these that we know that God is the one who controls our destiny. It is when we realise no matter how painful the situation or how desperate the situation, our steps are ordered by the Almighty. I have come to realise that sometimes we have to fight to reach our destiny. I have learnt to fight for my destiny despite the challenges that lie ahead. Never lend someone a pen to write your story. You are the best author of your narrative. Never mind the external forces if u are in pursuit of Greatness. Don’t wait for the perfect moment to perfect your vision. Perfect it as you embark on your journey of life.

Whatever comes your way, be it negative or positive use it to your advantage. Use your time to build your purpose. That purpose will transform communities. As I celebrate my birthday, I celebrate the pain, the setbacks, the embarrassment, the depression I have endured. Those experiences thickened my skin and developed a strong character in me.
So my message today is never mind the way you were born, when you were born where you were born and to whom you were born.
Don’t let circumstances of life bring limitation in your life. Strive to change the face of your story. Live a legacy of greatness in your life. Create a character of gratitude and create a positive impact. Volunteer to work with others for the good of the society. Do what you are passionate about. Visit the sick, mentor the young, visit the elderly, go to the gym, study, go for dancing or music lessons and learn new things everyday.

Find a mentor and surround yourself with great people. Write a book, compile a documentary, eat healthy, laugh with family and friends, develop, work out your vision and implement it gradually. By the time you grow old you will realise you have lived a purpose driven life. Try to laugh and smile all the time. If possible avoid negative and toxic people. Embrace your individuality. Dress up and go out. Make everyday a special occasion if possible. Interact with great and wise people. Such a life will produce fruits that will inspire generations to come.

As l celebrate my birthday, I celebrate the greatness of God in me. I celebrate what God has deposited in me. I celebrate my purpose
